Painting Themes

Subjects and Themes

The images in my paintings usually include one or two figures, sometimes more, in invented imaginary interiors accompanied by displays of rich still life and fabrics. They are always strongly colored and loosely painted. The images are not arbitrary nor without meaning. They are usually based on some mythological or literary source. However, the sources are obscure and intentionally difficult to read.

The paintings are not meant as narratives. The source material, literary or otherwise, is only meant to provide the occasion or inspiration to make a painting. The intention for me is to make a work of art that exists and communicates through aesthetics means beyond the subject matter to those who can appreciate painting abstractly and in the way one may approach music. These paintings are not therefore meant to be read in a literal way for conventional ideas and meanings.

I present the subjects, themes, or sources I have used recently to create some of my paintings. This information is meant to provide some access to the development and evolution of these paintings.
